House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy says President Trump bears responsibility for last week’s riot at the Capitol and should have immediately denounced the mob. But he says it would be a mistake to impeach Trump in such a short time frame. (Jan. 13)
McCarthy is speaking as the House debates whether to impeach President Donald Trump for a second time in about 13 months. He says “a vote to impeach would further divide this nation, a vote to impeach will further fan the flames, the partisan division.”
McCarthy, a close ally of Trump over the past four years, says Trump “bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters. He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding.”
But instead of impeachment, he is calling for a fact finding commission and censure resolution.
