Supporters of Myanmar’s ruling party revelled into the night on Sunday after early results from a general election showed that Leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party was widely expected to win comfortably, though results are not expected until Monday.
In the country’s biggest city, Yangon, crowds massed outside the NLD headquarters, waving the red flags of the party and carrying pictures of Suu Kyi. Supporters defied COVID-19 restrictions to celebrate the early result from local poll stations.
The general election is seen as a referendum on the fledgling democratic government that remains popular at home but has seen its reputation collapse overseas amid allegations of genocide.
