Since the ‘South African’ variant surfaced in Madagascar, the island nation has recorded around 11,500 infections and 200 deaths per month, according to official figures – which are likely a vast underestimation. The situation is spinning out of control, blighted by oxygen and medicine shortages. The authorities though, say the situation is worse elsewhere. Gaëlle Borgia reports.
