Monday marks the five-year anniversary of Fort McMurray being evacuated as a massive wildfire rushed into the northern Alberta community.
In the years that have followed, the urban area has also faced flooding, financial hardship and the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic in the province.
Still, the community has lived up to its unofficial motto: “Fort Mac Strong.” Residents have shown incredible resilience and remain deeply committed to rebuilding the community that lies at the heart of the oil sands.
Global News decided to take a closer look at that positive spirit and resolve.
In this special, Global News explores not only that, but also the plans in place to prevent another disaster from causing the same level of devastation, what it is about Fort McMurray that has many of its residents so passionate about it and what the future may hold for a place that’s not like any other in the country.
