Global National: May 17, 2021 | Israel, Hamas leaders refuse to back down amid calls for ceasefire

International calls are growing for a ceasefire to the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict. But neither side is backing down and as Eric Sorensen reports, the death toll will only rise as innocent civilians become collateral damage.

And as the conflict worsens, U.S. President Joe Biden is finally joining those calls supporting a ceasefire, while stopping short of demanding an end to the violence. As Jackson Proskow reports, Biden is facing pressure to take stronger action.

In Canada, Brig.-Gen. Krista Brodie is now in charge of the country’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout, after Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin stepped aside while the military investigates a sexual misconduct allegation against him. Abigail Bimman reports on what’s known so far about the accusation.

Manitoba now has the highest COVID-19 infection rate per capita in Canada, making it the country’s worst hot spot.
