Ontario’s chief medical officer discusses AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine pause | LIVE

Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams will provide an update on Friday on the province’s decision regarding the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine after pausing its use earlier in May.

The Ontario government paused the use of the vaccine on May 11 due to safety and supply-related issues.

Dr. Williams said at the time the decision was made out of an abundance of caution becaues of increased instances of an extremely rare and potentially fatal blood clotting disorder, Vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT), linked to the shot.

The disorder has been identified in at least 18 people in Canada who received the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, with 10 more under review. There have been three deaths associated with the condition.
