Palestinians across Israel and the occupied territories went on strike in a show of collective action against Israel’s policies on Tuesday as Israeli airstrikes continued to rain down on Gaza.
“The strike is a must on all of us, as youth, to take part in this strike, to stop working for at least a day to create some change in Jerusalem and the country,” said Jabal Mukaber resident Diaa Rabaya’a.
Tuesday’s airstrikes toppled a six-story building that housed libraries and educational centers belonging to the Islamic University.
Gaza health officials said they had no reports of Palestinians killed overnight, the first apparent reduction of casualties since fighting erupted on May 10.
At least 213 Palestinians have been killed in heavy airstrikes since, including 61 children and 36 women, with more than 1,440 people wounded, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
Since the fighting began last week, the Israeli military has launched hundreds of air strikes it says are targeting Hamas’ militant infrastructure, while Palestinian militants have fired more than 3,400 rockets from civilian areas in Gaza at civilian targets in Israel.
